Our program
Have a browse through our gallery to get a sense of the breadth and depth of the program we offer to the people within the community at Taksenkangbloung.
Supporting school children and their families to access education is our central focus. With thanks to our supporters, we are able to engage a disadvantaged community by providing a safe and inclusive community space, daily transport support to attend the local Khmer school and all school supplies and uniforms. Daily structured tutoring, English and IT classes are provided in addition to core, government-provided schooling at the local school. At both ends of the education journey, the community centre offers a pre-school playgroup and works with older students and their families to identify vocational training and tertiary education opportunities.
We also provide healthcare referrals, fresh filtered drinking water, and a safe and nurturing environment for children to spend the day outside of school hours should they wish.
The principal of the local school meets with our directors on a regular basis and is fully supportive of our program concept. She is aware of the vulnerabilities of some of our participants, and during our intiial phase of operation was very aware of the delicacy required in assimilating them into the schooling environment and monitoring their progress. Many of our students had not attended school before joining the program in 2013, and some were as old as 10 at the time of enrolment.

Outreach programs
We conduct various outreach projects in order to assist the entire community. This case-by-case assistance is provided as needed and in accordance with established needs criteria. Examples of frequently provided assistance include the provision of food parcels to vulnerable families and the provision of basic health care.
We ‘keep it local’ by employing people from the village and sourcing products through local suppliers. The village is encouraged to take shared responsibility for the success of the Community Centre’s various programs.
For information on our approach to engaging volunteers in achieving outreach goals, please read “responsible in-country volunteering”.
